Image Just released on Feb 14th, 2006 is Beta2 of Microsoft’s Antispyware Program, which was renamed to Windows Defender. My first impressions of Windows Defender is that it is a major improvement and I would definitely encourage everyone running Windows XP to download and install it.

Why am I so enthusiastic about Windows Defender? One of the best new features that was added was the ability to have Windows Defender run as a background service. By running as a background service Windows Defender basically integrates Spyware protection into Windows XP and most importantly it runs as a low resource intensive service.

A few things to note:

  • After downloading and installing Windows Defender I had a problem with updating the Definitions. It kept giving me an error stating, “The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices…” To solve this, I went to Windows Update and ran the custom update and voila there was a fix available, once I downloaded the fix via Windows Update everything worked perfectly.

  • Also, if you have any P2P software, such as Kazaa, Windows Defender will prompt you to uninstall it. It doesn’t require this but be prepared to have it bark at you to do so.

  • You do not need to remove other antispyware or antivirus programs to run Windows Defender (Beta 2). Other programs or Windows Defender (Beta 2) may prompt you to allow or block an action, but there are no other known incompatibilities with other antispyware or antivirus programs
