Image About a year ago now, I wrote an article for FixMyXP, called 99 Useful Run Commands. Over the course of the year, this article has brought in an enormous amount of traffic and really put FixMyXP on the map, over 140,000 hits.  This article even has been plagerized numerous times (other websites copying and pasting into their websites, and claiming it as their own).   Because there was so much interest in this topic, I revisited it a few times (raising the total number of Run Commands from 99 to 113).  I felt it was time again, to update.  I was suprised that I was able to add an addtional 43 more Run Commands, bringing the total to 156!   I hope you enjoy!

Added on 02/23/07: With the release of Windows Vista, the Run Commands list has increased. If you have Windows Vista, take a look at my other site FixMyVista.com. Look for the article 177 Run Commands

Do you use the Run feature in Windows XP?  For most, this feature remains unused (or rarely used).  Why is that?   Well, First off nearly all of the Run Commands Correspond to a particular Control Panel Item or a Utility, Tool or Task that can be accessed through Windows.    There are, however, tools and utilities that I bet you never knew you had that can be accessed through the Run feature.   The main reason most people don't use the Run feature is because they don't know the Commands.  So, to solve that problem, I decided to put together the following listing, which lists 99 Run Commands and what they correspond too...

11/27/05
Added 16 Additional Run Command, Highlighted in Blue.
Removed 2 Duplicates.
Total :  113 Run Commands

3/18/06
Added 2 Additional Run Commands, Highlighted in Green.
Removed 1 Duplicate.
Total :  114 Run Commands

3/27/06
Added 42 Additional Run Commands, Highlighted in Yellow.
Total :  156 Run Commands

I just started playing an online game called, "dark throne". It's nice, but requires I click a "recruit" army button 250 - 350 times a day (about 15 minutes) in order to play the game and grow your army. Am about to quit playing because of the boring & time consuming clicking of this button, which is required every day. I went on google and saw an auto click program someone had written (it's below). I don't know how to set it up to work (my computer had Vista). Can anyone advise? my e-mail is This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it - thank you and best wishes in '08.

compmgmt.msc is an awsome run command.A few years ago i bought a 250gb western digital hard drive for my old computer and it wasn't compatible. It only gave me 130gb of space. When i upgraded to a new computer and transfered the hard drive over it was still maxed out at 130gb. But thanks to the compmgmt.msc run command I saw on this list I was able to enter disk management and partition my hard drive and fully use all the storage space possible. Thanks, great list.

Command from Winkey R -- cmd /k then command.
written by Twizler, October 19, 2007
When you want to run a command such as ipconfig /all

you can run it as one statement from the run window. You dont need to open a command prompt and the typ it. Add a /k to cmd (cmd /k )swtich.
It tells cmd to add the command to the DOS window. Very much like a pipe |.

Example: (winkey R)-->Run window-->

cmd /k ipconfig /all
----------
Or try
------
cmd /k ipconfig /displaydns

Configure your Desktop in Vista
written by JohnVista, September 22, 2007
Most people's opinion of Windows Vista is that it's not worth the time or expense of the upgrade, except when it comes pre-loaded with a new system. I would agree with most people, however, one of the best things about Windows Vista is the customization features that's available throughout the entire software line (Basic, Business, Ultimate, etc.).

With Windows Vista, you can customize the theme and user interface with Vista desktops, skins, widgets, icons, and more. And many are available for free to download at websites like http://www.vista-skins.com or by typing in "vista skins" at Google.

For several years, Mac, Unix, and Linux users always bragged about how Mac OS X or their GUI interface outshined the dated, aged, tired Windows interface. Now, you have a chance to leapfrog or even get a comparable Mac OS X experience by updating the Windows Vista's skins and themes.

".." command
written by David Fear, June 12, 2007
Microsoft Access start|run command should be 'msaccess' not 'access.cpl'. Great site tho mate!

Another shortcut is ".." .... info below

All LAN users: if you type start|run, and type "..", it will take you to your network home directory. From there, insert a shortcut to your favourite file(s) into this directory (e.g. shortcut to I:David FearOncall Spreadsheet.xls), rename that shortcut to "OC", and that becomes your START|RUN shortcut! so you do the ol' START|RUN, "OC", and it will fire up your spreadsheet. i LOVE this feature!

Task management from the run line.
written by Jack Heath, June 12, 2007
Taskkill and tasklist are cool, as administrator they can be used to kill applications running on other machines, or to monitor if people are using software not allowed by company policy.

Schtasks can be used to start processes, but it's not quite as easy to use from a command line. smilies/grin.gif

Netstat, nbtstat, and route print very usefull
written by Jack Heath, June 12, 2007
Route Print

Displays the ARP and Routing tables for the workstation.
[edit]

Nbtstat

Displays NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NetBT) protocol statistics, NetBIOS name tables for both the local computer and remote computers, and the NetBIOS name cache. Nbtstat allows a refresh of the NetBIOS name cache and the names registered with Windows Internet Name Service (WINS). Used without parameters, nbtstat displays help.

* Useful for finding the MAC address or machine name of a given IP or in diagnosing IP conflict. However, this utility is a snap-shot and only shows the remote machine name table at the time the utility is run. It does however seem to work pulling both from native Windows machines and Samba.

Syntax

nbtstat [-a RemoteName] [-A IPAddress] [-c] [-n] [-r] [-R] [-RR] [-s] [-S] [Interval]

Netstat

Displays active TCP connections, ports on which the computer is listening, Ethernet statistics, the IP routing table, IPv4 statistics (for the IP, ICMP, TCP, and UDP protocols), and IPv6 statistics (for the IPv6, ICMPv6, TCP over IPv6, and UDP over IPv6 protocols). Used without parameters, netstat displays active TCP connections.

* Most useful to displays all active TCP connections and the TCP and UDP ports on which the computer is listening.

Syntax

netstat [-a] [-e] [-n] [-o] [-p Protocol] [-r] [-s] [Interval]

Registry Shortcuts and Class IDs, CLSID, in Run Di
written by Simon, June 10, 2007
You can basically run any shortcut and Class ID, CLSID, found in the Windows Registry in the Run dialog box. For example, I needed to open My Network Places of which the Class ID, CLSID is

{208D2C60-3AEA-1069-A2D7-08002B30309D}

in the Windows (XP) registry so at the Run dialog you should type

::{208D2C60-3AEA-1069-A2D7-08002B30309D}

to open the My Network Places explorer window. Notice the two colons before the Class ID. Make sure you use them. To find relevant CLSIDs open Run, Windows Key -> r, and type regedit. Navigate to -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersio nexplorer and browse for your relevant CLSIDs. My Network Places can be found at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersio nexplorerDesktop.

Previously someone asked for a Run shortcut to the Recycle Bin. The CLSID for the Recycle Bin is -> {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} so open Run, Windows Key -> r, and enter ::{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} to get the Recycle Bin. Don't forget those colons at the start.

Some useful CLSIDs are ->
Briefcase {85BBD920-42A0-1069-A2E4-08002B30309D}
Desktop {00021400-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}

command prompt vs. run box
written by ScottD, April 24, 2007
Hi, all.

PyrosRPeople2: the run box and command prompt are almost the same behind the scenes. If you can get to a command prompt, you can use all the tricks listed on this page (unless security policies block access), with only some minor changes...

Instead of %temp% in the Run box, try command line CD %temp%

Instead of firefox, try start firefox
...
written by ScottD, April 24, 2007
@ PyrosRPeople2: the Run box and the command prompt are 2 views of the same thing -- the run box just has a nice history list and keeps people from going into a coma when they see a DOS prompt. All the same commands should work both places.

Some need minor adjustments -- instead of '%temp%', try 'CD %temp%', or for some apps, instead of just the app name, use 'start' in front of the name (e.g. 'start firefox')

BTW - thanks for the great list!

Hmmm, in the spirit of trying to be helpful, first of all, if something is in a box you don't know how to open, and it takes some research to find out how to get in, it's as such to protect you, there might be something in there that can hurt you, research the contents BEFORE you go inside ie msconfig, regedit, etc. My opinion is that many will crash thier systems(seen it happen too often, and don't expect sympathy from your pc tech), clicking on things is just too easy. These utilities are for advanced users, so become advanced before you burn your fingers, just read a little more. Another thing is that when u take advice from someone who posts that you don't know, don't try it until u get a second opinion, the primary cause of security/integrety breakdown on a system is the user. As for defragging everyday? Needless, unless you r a gamer and u r in second place, once a week I think will suffice. Good luck all, thanks for the inadvertant cascade of entertainment Steve, lol. Awesome page, thx winxp550, very helpful, a giant step smilies/smiley.gif By the way, does anyone know how to pull the pin on this grenade? lol, that's right, if i can't pull the pin, I can't handle the nade for sure smilies/wink.gif Take care.

Messneger Service
written by Brandon55, January 28, 2007
How can send messege to another computer on local nerwork by using run command in start menu

Run Command:
net send computer message

Where "computer" is either the name of your computer, or the internal IP Address of the computer on your LAN (such as 192.168.x.x), and "message" is the message you wish to send.
Example: net send 192.168.1.1 THIS IS MY MESSAGE!
This command requires the Message service to be enabled and started on the computer from which you are sending the message and the computer receiving the message. To do this, just open the run command type in "services.msc",scroll down to the "Messenger" service and enable it and set it to automatic.

You can also do this by creating a batch file, either one where you can type in th name of the computer, or one which you have a predefined computer.
If you want to be able to type in which computer you will send the message to, make the batch file:
@echo off:
:A
echo MESSENGER
set /p n=User:
set /p m=Message:
net send %n% %m%
Pause
Goto A

If you want to have a predefined computer, make the batch file:
@echo off:
:A
echo MESSENGER
set /p m=Message:
net send xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx %m%
Goto A

Where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is either the IP Address or the computer name! Using the information above, you should be able to also make a batch file with a predefined message!

Registry Location
written by John Thicke, January 19, 2007
Hello everyone,

Google the regkey HKCRApplications or open up your registry and find the key. You will notice that almost every entry on this list is there. You can launch almost every program in this list from the run command using the name of the Registry entry minus the .exe. Or, if it is a Control Panel Applet (.cpl) use the entire entry i.e. mail.cpl.

For example,

In my registry, I have an entry called outlook.exe. If I type outlook at the run command, Microsoft Outlook will launch.

I seem to remember being able to edit the entries in this list to make keywords for any program you want to launch, I just don't remember how.

Good luck,

Hope this helps someone.

After you push and type in msconfig and press OK, be sure to click the Selective Startup radio button before you click on the startup tab.

Selective Startup radio button is the third one down on the GENERAL tab when System Configuration Utility first opens.

The first radio button says "Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services"
The second radio button says "Diagnostic Startup - load basic devices and services only"
The third radio button (the one you want) says "Selective Startup" be sure to put the dot in the third one (selective startup) and then click on the Startup tab at the top.

There are six tabs at the top: 1.General, 2.SYSTEM,INI, 3.WIN.INI, 4.BOOT.INI, 5.Services, 6.Startup.
The one you want is 6. Startup
When the startup window opens you can see and select or deselect the programs that start with windows.

Nice list, but I am looking for something that might not be out there. Looking for a way to manage my scheduled tasks, basically the ones that didn't run stay in the list, and I would like them to be removed after X number of days instead of loading up my task window. I only run a shut down utility that uses an AT command so that I can have more flexibility in letting users cancel the shut down if they are still working. The AT command runs and schedules my utility to run Mon-Fri at a specific time with specific parameters. However if the AT command has run and loaded the utility to run but you shutdown before the utility has ran, then the task remains in the list, and well it cause a great amount of clutter. Any Ideas as to how to remove these unrun tasks that have timed out??

written by null you noob, January 14, 2007
ok so you go to run and type msconfig then when it loads look for the tab >start up< then you have some knowledge and uncheck the programs you dont want to start up this should also start your pc faster and for doing a run prefetch search and deleting them all and emptying your bin i wouldnt advise that it doesnt seem like a good idea oh and steve for the 300th time msconfig

kaymatrix,

I think a better way to make a batch (especially with XP) would be ...
@echo off
cls
"whatever command here"
exit

the reson why with Windows XP is, if you make a batch to call a command (let's say "CMD")
and you don't release the batch out of memory you could end up in a loop
(the batch reopening it's self)

But if you want to impliment a command like "ipconfig /release & /renew"
a batch program like this is sutible...

title IP Renew
@echo off
:top
cls
echo **************
echo IP Renew
echo **************
echo Renew IP (y/n)
set /p userinp=
if "%userinp%"=="y" goto yes
if "%userinp%"=="n" goto no
:yes
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
pause
:no

then save it as myfilename.bat

(Be sure to save it to system32 dir if you want to open it using the RUN command)

Eugene,
What OS are you running?
you might need to download the MSCONFIG from this site,
just fallow the instructions on how to install it.

Hey xp550, you forgot the most useful one of them all, prefetch.

Just type in prefetch, highlight everything and delete 'em. Then empty your recycle bin. Your computer thinks it's had a nitrous injection. And it's completely safe, I promise.
Merry Christmas.

changing msconfig isn't the right answer
written by A litle better than a newbie, December 19, 2006
msconfig checks the programs in your computer when it boots up. If you stop a program in msconfig, your computer won't check to see if it's working properly. You need to stop programs from running in Services. To get to Services, right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop -> Manage -> Services and Applications (in the right hand side) -> Services (in the left hand side). You can turn them off or you can change them from Automatic to Manual. If you disable some of the services, you will prevent other programs from running that depend upon that service, so be careful.
