To Check your Paging File, go into your control panel, then click on System, then go to the Advanced Tab, and Under “Performance” click “Settings” then the Advanced Tab . On the Bottom you should see “Virtual Memory” and a value. This is the value that must be at least as large as how much memory is in your system. If the Virtual Memory Value is smaller than your system memory, click Change and change the Min Virtual Memory to a number that is greater than your total system memory, then click “Set” and Reboot. ---- February 5th, 2006 ------- I am adding this addendum to the original article in response to the question of, "how do you run Clearmem?" that was posted in the Comments for this article.  Every time you want to run it, you simply double click on clearmem.exe, When you double click on it, a black DOS window will pop up, like this:  It will pause for awhile (don't worry that is normal), then it will Flush the memory and automatically close the black box. It automatically creates the files Flush1, Flush2, & Flush3 in whatever folder you ran it from. The next time you want to run Clearmem, simply double click on the Clearmem.exe again. Comments (25)

Cleaning up your RAM to make your machine run faster is one of the internetmyths. There are several tips and tricks on the internet for speeding up your computer which at best might hurt your system. Another of these myths, for example is cleaning the prefetch folder. Like said before Clearmem had a function back in the old days but in XP it does nothing, because XP has gooed memory management already built in.

probably not a lot faster at all has Winxp recommends you use 256mb ram at least..so you computer will struggle no matter what you do unless you buy some more Memory

Ran this. My sound driver gets deleted. I also have to re-install some vital stuff and if anything my pc has slowed down after using this hunk of junk.

I ran it after noticing some horrible load times and an unusual amount of my RAM being used up while only running a browser. Things are MUCH faster running this and I am using much less of my RAM then before! close to getting this machine back to its quick speeds

Come on guys... has anyone *actually* seen his XP system run faster because of this thing? It was made available back in the days of Windows NT 4.0 to work around a bug of the VM system. Not really a bug, say a design flaw that caused it not to shrink the working sets of inactive processes enough. I very much doubt this defect still exists in anything at or newer than W2K. Futhermore it brings a busy system to an almost complete halt for quite a while when run. After this you may actually see the most active application run faster, but whenever one of the idle ones come back to work, it will page like hell and shake your disk insanely.
Don't waste you time with this early 90s tool, trust the VM system in XP or buy more memory if it's tight. written by Booger, August 05, 2007

i think freeramxp pro works much better. more simple and just works. Also clears and refreshes memory. i don't really like clearmem.

After making the suggested set up, do you have any metrics as to how much faster my computer will perform?
I have 256 MB of RAM running Windows XP/SP2 and Firefox Web browser is always demanding more memory. I liked your post and would like to make my computer run faster with better memory management.
